Des modifications y ont été apportées pour atteindre les objectifs suivants :
- favoriser la conciliation famille-travail-études, notamment en bonifiant certains congés
- rehausser les protections accordées aux travailleurs qui n’ont que le régime des normes du travail pour encadrer leurs conditions de travail
- adapter la loi aux nouvelles réalités du marché du travail
La plupart des changements sont applicables depuis le 12 juin et d’autres devront être mis en application à partir du 1er janvier 2019. Les changements touchent entre autres les sujets suivants : absences pour raisons familiales, absence pour maladie, congés pour naissance ou adoption, jours fériés, vacances annuelles. Les articles concernant les règles sur le harcèlement psychologique et sexuel sont aussi touchées par l’obligation de l’employeur de se doter une politique de prévention et de traitement des plaintes. Enfin, l’étalement des heures de travail sur plusieurs semaines est aussi prévu.
